With grilling season upon us, now is the perfect time to reclaim the meals you love with the beef cuts that count. Whether grilling up a traditional steak such as the T-bone or a new favorite such as the flat iron, ranch, or shoulder petite tender, the right grilling techniques and the proper cooking times help bring out the best of your favorite beef cuts in your own backyard. This month the Minnesota Beef Council is providing you with some great tools and tips on how you can enjoy your favorite beef cuts on the grill. Happy Beef Month!

3 Simple Steps for Grilling Beef

Step 1: Prepare grill (charcoal or gas) according to manufacturer’s directions for medium heat.

Step 2. Season beef (directly from the refrigerator) with herbs or spices, as desired. Check out our Twin Cities Trail Dust Rub Recipe created by the Minnesota Beef Council in partnership with 2011 Minnesota Beef Council award winning Beef Backer Chef Peter Christenson at Woolley’s Steakhouse. Place on cooking grid.

Step 3. Grill, covered, according to grilling time chart (p.30-31), turning occasionally. After cooking, season with salt, if desired.

Wondering how you can enjoy some of your favorite beef meals on a budget this beef month? Consider these savings tips:

  • Look for family packs which give you more beef at a lower price per pound, or seek out smaller portions.
  • Find smaller portions of premium steaks if you don’t want to buy in bulk. You get a high-quality, perfect portion at a lower unit price without worrying about any going to waste.
  • Consider the price per serving when you see the price on the label. A pound of beef – which currently sells for about $4.53 on average -works out to just about $1.13 per serving.
  • Ask for help from the friendly staff at your local grocery store. Their job is to recommend the best beef cut for your needs and help you understand how best to cook it or pull out your phone and visit the Interactive Butcher Counter tool on our Minnesota Beef Council website to find economical beef cuts, best cooking methods and recipes for the cuts you see in the meat case.
