As October winds down many kids look forward to choosing a costume and heading out for an annual night of trick or treating.
As you think about whether to participate and what to hand out, you may want to go a bit outside the box. Healthier snack options or small toys or prizes can be both unique and fun.
Everything from single serve packs of dried fruits or nuts to cereal bars, single-wrapped beef jerky or pencils and stickers make nice giveaways.
If you do choose candy, consider dark chocolate or something with protein-containing nuts or seeds instead of sweets that are simply all sugar.
Finally, stay away from items that aren’t commercially wrapped unless it’s for your own family. While fresh fruit or homemade popcorn balls are great snacks, it is likely most parents of trick or treaters would throw these items out for safety reasons.
From Minnesota’s farmers, we wish you all a safe and happy fall season!
